The symbol of Okinawa and UNISCO's world heritage site, Shuri Castle, was destroyed in a fire early morning of October 31, 2019. Just recently restored to its original state, the castle’s large parts were burnt down and damaged, including the main and seven other buildings.
Okinawa lost its symbol of the Ryukyu heritage and its citizen is disheartened by the incident. Many well wishes and encouragements, including the support for the rebuilding of the castle are coming in.
