Ernst Krenkel was a famous Soviet polar explorer, professional radio operator, member of the first Soviet drifting
North Pole-1 stations and other Arctic expeditions.
The polar station call sign was UPOL, but Krenkel is remembered his call sign RAEM. In the intervals when he was free from
work he conducted radio communication with different continents. Him was heard both in the USSR and abroad.
He set a distance record of radio communications by making a connection between two diametrically opposed points of the globe using homemade equipment with the callsign RPX on January 12, 1930.
E. T. Krenkel considered mastering Morse code as an unconditional necessary skill for any radio operator.
The Union of Radio Amateurs of Russia and Radio Magazine, together with Radio Club "ARKTIKA" have established an award program dedicated to the 115th anniversary of the birth of E.T. Krenkel. It includes diploma and plaque "RAEM-115".
