ZM50LA is the second in a series of three special event callsigns that commemorate the 50th anniversary of maritime tragedies.
Operating during June 2018, ZM50LA recalls the loss of the freighter MV Maranui (callsign ZMLA) during a storm east of Coromandel Peninsula on 13 June 1968. Nine people died in the Maranui disaster.

1968 was a tragic year for New Zealand shipping, with the loss of Maranui and the inter-island ferry Wahinne plus a fire at sea aboard the liner Gothic. Sixty-seven people died in these events, but many were saved through remarkable feats of seamanship and heroism. Get more info about all three 2018 commemorative callsigns.
